Tune-In 4/25: Retro Cocktail Hour 500th Broadcast

Last November, The WAITIKI 7 made its stunning American debut at Liberty Hall (Lawrence, KS). Kansas Public Radio organized the show and taped it for use on its Retro Cocktail Hour program’s 500th episode. Well, the time has come… this Saturday is when the show is going to air! Our congratulations and sincere thanks to program host Darrell Brogdon, production manager Jason Slote, and the rest of the KPR team for hosting us last November.

Be sure to tune in. 8PM EDT, 7PM CDT, 6PM MDT, 5PM MST, 5PM PDT, 4PM AKDT, 3PM HST… (there! that should cover all you US listeners)… to our German fans: that’s 2AM CEST on Sunday. Listen online at http://kansaspublicradio.org. The stream will be available on-demand beginning Monday, April 27. Check out the Retro Cocktail Hour website: kpr.ku.edu/retro

The live show was a terrific success, in all senses: not only was the house sold out, but W7 was just excited to perform as were the audience for us. We played our longest show yet: over 3 hours of exotica; a variety of classic Denny and Lyman arrangements to our modern originals, and everything in between.

Although we had first planned to use tracks from that show on a live album, a snafu in the concert recording later meant we’d have to record our first album in a studio (which is the story behind Adventures in Paradise).

Fortunately, Darrell and his crew were able to salvage some of the show recording for a radio broadcast (what comes over the airwaves doesn’t necessarily need to be the same fidelity as what is delivered by CD), and TODAY is the day that that audio airs!

  • About The WAITIKI 7

  • The WAITIKI 7 are helping to define a new movement in Exotica.

Dedicated to the preservation and resurgence of Exotica music, and the related tiki culture, W7 is modeled after the classic groups of Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, and Gene Rains. The WAITIKI 7 is the only modern group that performs exotica completely live and acoustic—just like in the 1950s.
