Lopaka Colon

Hawaii-born percussionist Lopaka Colon defines the sound of exotica percussion. Performing worldwide since his days as one-third of the trio Pure Heart (with Jon Yamasato and Jake Shimabukuro), Mr. Colon carries on the legacy and tradition of exotica (and its bird calls!) once performed by his father Augie Colon in the original Martin Denny band. A key member of the exotica show group DON TIKI, Mr. Colon also performs frequently with Henry Kapono, the Swampa ZZ Collective, Deshannon Higa, and leads his own exotica group Intoxica.

Aloha everybody! My name is Micah, I grew up on the Big Island and moved to Santa Cruz, CA to go away to college and have been residing here ever since (2004). I have met many interesting people and have made many friends, and it was through Hawaiian music that we bonded. One friend in particular really loves Colon’s album “groove machine”. I had to look everywhere for it until Amazon was able to get it! And it is now her favorite band. She really loves the song “step by step” and so do I. She will be turning 30 in September and I was thinking that I would really love for them to play a show here in California…ANYWHERE! WE WILL GO! I don’t know how to contact the band directly, but I thought this would be a good place to start. I know its short notice and you guys are busy, so I dont expect it to happen very soon, but I did just want to write at least to say how much your music has inspired not only my life but those I love as well. Please keep up the great work! I hope to hear back from one of you, but in any case, Mahalo for the awesome vibes! Ahui Hou!

    Sincerely,
    Micah Palmer

  • About The WAITIKI 7

  • The WAITIKI 7 are helping to define a new movement in Exotica.

Dedicated to the preservation and resurgence of Exotica music, and the related tiki culture, W7 is modeled after the classic groups of Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, and Gene Rains. The WAITIKI 7 is the only modern group that performs exotica completely live and acoustic—just like in the 1950s.
