Happy New Year, friends and fans of The WAITIKI 7!

Third Time’s the Charm (We Hope…)

Some of our fans might recall the seemingly endless troubles we’ve had with live radio broadcasts in the past! Apparently our WFMU show is no exception. Hopefully you will finally get to hear it this weekend. Tune into wfmu.org if you’re not local to the NJ area.

FINALLY HEAR WAITIKI 7’s WFMU SHOW: This Sunday, October 11th, 5pm - 7pm (Eastern):

A Tropical Excursion With the Waitiki 7: Salvaged Shipwreck Edition
This is the radio show the gods don’t want you to hear! First, on Sept. 20, this program’s broadcast of two hours of exotica — including a live set from the Waitiki 7 — from a boat was waylaid when Poseidon forced our sturdy craft into New York’s version of the Bermuda Triangle, which swallowed up the broadcast signal like so many rummy seafarers. Then, just minutes before an attempted rebroadcast on Sept. 27, Thor tossed a celestial fistful of lightning bolts at the WFMU Building, knocking out the power for hours. So this time, to be on the safe side, a couple of the younger WFMU DJs have been flung into the mouth of a piping volcano — so hopefully, this third time will be the charm. Be a witness to the raising of this Titanic of a radio show from Davy Jones’s Locker!

WFMU Re-Broadcast Today @ 6 PM

The WAITIKI 7 record a show for Gaylord Fields on WFMU

Last Saturday, following a taping for Armchair Travelling’s DVD of TIKI we found ourselves sitting in 5 hours of NJ traffic thanks to some bonehead construction just a half mile from WFMU. We never thought we’d make it to the station. But when we did, the time was ripe for us to play some ultra slick live exotica.

If you missed last week’s broadcast of our live performance for WFMU, you can catch it again today! It airs at 6 PM. Tune into WFMU on the ray-dee-oh or online at wfmu.org. Or, if you really can’t make it, check it out later: The show will be permanently archived online a few hours after it airs.

Our thanks to Gaylord Fields and Glenn Luttmann for making this show possible.

P.S.: We followed up our WFMU show with a trip to Sabor Peru in Rutherford, NJ. That place was incredible… man, the tako ceviche… you should check it out if you’re ever in the area!

From WFMU.org:

A Tropical Expedition With the Waitiki 7: Landlubber’s Edition
On Sunday, Sept. 20, this radio host broadcast a special program featuring two hours of exotica — including a live performance by the Waitiki 7 — from a boat! However, being that WFMU doesn’t quite have the pirate broadcast transmission capabilities of Radio Luxembourg, the signal was less than ship-shape. Therefore, to appease Poseidon, the entire show, from stem to stern, will be rebroadcast for your listening pleasure. So if you had already put your Hawaiian shirt or muumuu on mothballs and had packed away the Mai Tai mix now that summer’s over, here’s a second chance to embark on that adventure to paradise.

  • About The WAITIKI 7

  • The WAITIKI 7 are helping to define a new movement in Exotica.

Dedicated to the preservation and resurgence of Exotica music, and the related tiki culture, W7 is modeled after the classic groups of Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, and Gene Rains. The WAITIKI 7 is the only modern group that performs exotica completely live and acoustic—just like in the 1950s.
